A building’s external paints and coatings serve as both an aesthetic enhancement and a weatherproofing mechanism. As they deteriorate, unsightly cracks and chips may allow water to enter the building envelope, which can cause mold growth, dampness, and even heat loss. As opposed to interior paints, exterior paints and coatings are made with special ingredients to provide waterproofing, color fading resistance, and high flexibility to avoid chipping and cracking when buildings expand and contract in response to temperature changes. They need to be applied by a skilled installation crew and are supposed to last much longer than conventional paints.
